Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters

Germany's
Touring Car Titans

The DTM is Germany's home of touring car and GT racing. From the boxy homologation specials of the 1980s to today's GT3 cars, it has always been a battleground for Mercedes, BMW and Audi, fought out in front of huge crowds at the Nürburgring, Hockenheim and Norisring.

GT3 Era Begins
1984–1986
From Production Cars to DTM
Germany's touring car championship starts in 1984 as the Deutsche Produktionswagen-Meisterschaft and is renamed DTM in 1986. Factory-backed BMW M3s, Mercedes 190Es and Ford Sierras soon battle in front of huge crowds.
1988–1992
The Homologation Specials
Manufacturers build road-going "evolution" models to race. Klaus Ludwig wins the 1988 title in a Ford Sierra RS500 and the 1992 title in the winged Mercedes 190E Evo II, as Mercedes takes a 1-2-3 in the standings.
1993
Class 1 & The Alfa Invasion
New Class 1 rules allow far more freedom. Alfa Romeo arrives with the four-wheel-drive 155 V6 TI and Nicola Larini wins the title in its first season, winning 11 of 22 races.
1995–1996
ITC & Collapse
The series goes international as the ITC, but the technology and costs explode. Alfa Romeo and Opel pull out after 1996 and the championship collapses.
2000
Reborn as the Masters
The DTM returns as the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters with V8 silhouette racers from Mercedes, Opel and Audi. Bernd Schneider wins the first two titles of the new era.
2019
Class One Turbo Era
DTM switches to 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engines under "Class One" rules shared with Japan's Super GT. René Rast wins back-to-back titles in 2019 and 2020 for Audi.
2021–2023
GT3 & A New Owner
With manufacturers leaving, DTM switches to GT3 cars in 2021, opening the grid to Mercedes-AMG, BMW, Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini and more. In 2023 the German motoring club ADAC takes over the series.
